Lessons I learned from 6 Months of Paper Bento
Share
In January, I packed the first Paper Bento box at my own table, sealed it, and sent it out to land on someone's doorstep without knowing if they'd care. Six months later, I'm still packing every box myself, by hand, at that same table. That part hasn't changed.
A lot of other things have.
I started with one box and a simple idea: share the stationery stores I grew up loving in Japan, instead of just missing them from far away. Through Sakura in April, Soft Days in May, and now Steep & Unfold this month, that idea has turned into six actual boxes, each one built around a feeling I wanted people to sit with during that month.
The Beta Box customers found me back in October, before there was a public box to point to and say "here, this is real." Some of you have stayed through all of it, the beta season, the official launch in January, and every box since. That means a lot to me, even when I don't say it.
Curation is the part of this I've never doubted myself on. I know what makes a piece worth including, and that hasn't wavered since the first box.
The harder thing to trust has been everything else.
If I had to name the one lesson that's carried me through these past few months, it's self-trust.
Trusting that this keeps growing, even in the months when growth is quiet and only shows up as a few more orders or one more box going out the door.
Trusting that I will learn as I go, that I don't need every piece figured out before I take the next step.
And trusting that people believe in this as much as I do, which might be the hardest one for me, if I'm honest.
That last part got tested for me just last week, when I wrote about touring fulfillment warehouses and a moment when someone told me Paper Bento wasn't too small for them. I'm still turning that over. I think I had absorbed more rejection along the way than I realized, and hearing someone say that so plainly really stayed with me.
The biggest lesson of six months in: trust that this grows, trust that I learn as I go, trust that people believe in this as much as I do.
I'm still figuring out what kind of help actually makes sense, maybe a fulfillment partner somewhere down the road, maybe something closer to home in the meantime. The spirit I started with in January, wanting to bring people something thoughtful and unhurried, hasn't moved. The way I get to keep doing that is what's allowed to change.
This month's box, Steep & Unfold, came out of a much smaller memory: an afternoon as a kid, sitting with warm tea and nowhere to be. It feels fitting that it's the box closing out this six month chapter. Slow, unhurried, easy to sit inside.
As I'm writing this, there is only one box with almost nothing left. Orders close on the 20th, and I'll start shipping everything out early next week.
Once again, thanks for reading and building this with me for six months now.
One question before you go: what's something you started this year that already feels different than when you began?
I hope wherever you are, you get a little unhurried time this week, the same kind this box was made for.
Warmly,
Paper Bento
