Something my husband said stuck with me 🎂

Something my husband said stuck with me 🎂

Last weekend we threw a birthday party for my son at our neighborhood park.

Nothing too elaborate, just our closest friends and their kids. But it landed the week after a lot of travel, and as we got closer to the date, I was already stretched thin from getting everything organized.

In the days leading up to it, I could feel the stress building. By the morning of the party, I'd hit max stress, where you're moving fast just to get through the list. I actually forgot to eat because I wanted to make sure I got a chance to connect with everyone who came. And at some point I thought to myself: is all this stress even worth it, if I, the parent, can't actually enjoy the day?

That night after the party, I said something like that to my husband. I didn't expect his response.

"I think it is," he said.

"Our son had a blast. He loved seeing all his friends there, celebrating his special day, and that means a lot to him. If we rewind through the whole day, I think what made it special was that everyone showed up. Not the activities, not the decorations. Those are just the icing on the cake.”

That really stuck with me. I've been thinking about it since, in the context of Paper Bento too. I put so much work into the parts of this business that’s visible: like the packaging, or what I post on social media.

All of that matters, of course. I'm not saying it doesn't. But there's a deeper layer underneath all of it that I can't lose sight of: the connection with this community, the reason I'm doing this in the first place, the story I'm trying to tell, and the feeling behind it all. That's the part that actually holds everything else up.

The packaging design and what I post on social media are real, and I care about all of it. But if I'm honest, they're a lot like the decorations at that party.

They're the part you notice first, and I want them to be beautiful.

But they're the icing, not the cake.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading.

I hope you get a moment this week where you catch the deeper reason behind something you're building, even if it's just for yourself.

Was there something you almost missed the point of, until someone else pointed it out to you? Hit reply and tell me.

Have a lovely weekend♡
